I've been having iTune agonies as well, having received a new iPod shuffle for christmas that won't (obviously) work with the version already on the Mac. And, of course, I can't update iTunes (you're right, it doesn't tell you at all) without updating my OS, which means money. Love-Hate doesn't quite describe my relationship with Apple.
