what's the problem with the radio? I fitted an old portable in the Morris, largely because it looked right in the driver side dash pocket, with a suitable rexine covered mount. It was, predictably, crap as a radio. But disabling the tuner and tapping into the amp alone meant I could discreetly plug an MP3 in without spoiling the look, and still control volume via the knob. I did find it benefitted from lower impedance speakers, though.
