What do you do when you split up with someone and you're left with letters and... cards... and (in this case) stories? I never know what to do with this stuff; I don't want to throw it away, because it means a lot even after the fact, but... I never know what to do with it.

Stick it all in an envelope, or a box or something, and come back to it in a few years time, when it won't hurt any more.

I'd second that advise. When I broke up with Em I kept all the love-letters and things we sent each other for a few years. When it didn't hurt any more to read them I knew it was time to throw them out. :)

*hugs*

Put it in a shoe-box and then tuck it away somewhere safe. You'll want to come back and look at this some time in the future.

Hmm, 'boxing stuff up' to deal with later implies pro-activeness, which is something I fail at infinitely. The alternative approach is to just leave their stuff lying about everywhere (hair bands, jewelry, photos , etc..) and never really deal with anything
[Government mental health warning - Any new partner will be quite rightly put off by this. You will also have a nightmare argument if a previous g/f's hair band falls off a pile of junk and is found next to the bed]
I guess there's no good way - Occasionally I've been in a bad mood and thrown away everything including photos. This does not actually make anything better, especially if/when loneliness strikes.
