There are so many things about this story that annoy me... of course, the (style of the) reporting of it - which is exactly what I'd expect from the Daily Mail - is irritating in and of itself; but the captain not saying "well, guys, if you don't want to fly on this plane, you're welcome to step off" which is what he should have done, the police response, the whole damn lot, it angers me and it scares me.
I heard something like this at work the other day. This woman announcing loudly in the staff room that she didn't trust any of those people. And someone was like, who do you mean? and she said, Muslims. I don't trust any of them.
Which is the stupidest thing I've ever heard to start with, but it's particularly stupid given the population or the city we live in or taking a single look at our users. And how many hajibs I see every day at work. STUPID. IGNORANT. HORRIFYING.
Fortunately, everyone else was shocked and deeply uncomfortable by this woman's comments. One fellow was quite sure she was kidding, but she really was not. I turned to my friend and said, I'm not saying a damn freaking word, because I can see where this is going to go. I regret that, because normally I wouldn't let something like that go, but I've been feeling the pressure to keep the peace lately. I have no idea how to peacefully respond to those kinds of remarks.
I don't know how to tackle it either, tbh. I mean, stuff directed *at* me I'd tackle with sarcasm, same way I tackled it as a kid. But I forget that racial tension exists here, and that it's being incited by the right wing media - and politicians who think that keeping people scared will keep them in power - and I'm not sure where I was going with that sentance, I think I'm just scared by it all.
