Okay, being a weird one as I am, I've been planning to move to Canada (vaguely specifically Toronto*) for a while. Only I've never been (yeah, yeah... I'm strange, I know).

In a bit over a month I'm heading over to Toronto to stay with a friend, and have begun to ponder what I should see - both from the sad tourist point of view, but also from the getting an idea of whether it's a place I could happily live...

I can hire a car if I need to, but I'm right by a station... erm, so, yeah, if any of you have suggestions for places to visit in your fair city for a strange brit I'd be really greatful...

I'm also after nice (and gay friendly, ideally) coffee / book shops to hang out in / grab lunch at (I'm really not a McDonalds type) when I'm knackered from being a tourist or just to have the odd relaxing day**... So, um, yeah...

*If something can be vaguely specific.
** Especially since I'm demonstrating the fine art of 'living off credit' to do this post-university holiday...

Get the ferry to the islands. *nods* And, um, go everywhere!

Second Cup Coffee do the best oatmeal raisin cookies. And they're a chain and they're everywhere, so no excuse!

Do lots of walking. Um. I refer you to my big huge holiday post for other ideas.

I went to U of T for like, 6 months and lived on the northern limit of downtown and it's like, my most favourite place in the whole world! I'd move back over there in a second if I had the chance! So where abouts are you staying? Other than the obvious touristy stuff (CN Tower, Toronto Islands, Harbourfront, Casa Loma (the closest thing they have to a castle!) theres tons of stuff you can see just by wandering around the city. Like, Queens Street West is ace for shopping - lots of really unique boho/retro/vintage/punk/indie shops and cafes and record stores.. pretty much every corner you can think of is covered! The Eaton Center is great for 'proper' shopping.. cds and dvds are mege cheap! China Town is *insane* at this time of year, so many people it can be kinda bewildering, but fun to walk around - the same with little italy! If you like sports you should definately try go see a hockey game at Maple Leaf Gardens and take a tour of the SkyDome.. it's right underneath the CN Tower and it looks like a giant armadillo, so you can't miss it! Um.. what else.. oh! The best place to eat (in my opinion!) is a Goodtree restaurant which is in BCE Place downtown, right by Union Station (they have a website at www.richtree.ca). It's like, a marketplace restaurant where they have all these little stalls and they cook your food there and then.. and the crepes and waffles are absolutely amazing!

As for driving places, a trip to Niagara Falls only takes about an hour or so and is totally worth it if you've never been. If you don't want to drive it they do organised tours for about $70-$100 which pick up and drop off downtown and include boat tickets and stuff..

Anyway! I think I waffled long enough.. but seriously, if there's anything else specific (or vague :) that you want to know, gimme a shout :) Or, the people over at [livejournal.com profile] toronto are very helpful :)
