Question for the other Macolites

Teh G4; if one were to get a fastish G4 (800Mhz/faster) - do we think it could deal with Video + internet and Vimeo stuff? Kathryn's G4 Mac struggles with Vimeo files...

I ask this because there are a couple of things I'd like to do with the Ent Mac that really require it running a newer OS.

And it can't, 'cos it's a hackintosh; so a cheap old G4 seems like a possibility.

In other news, Flattr sounds interesting.

My iBook is an 800Mhz G4 and it's sloooooow, despite maxing out the RAM to something like 1.2GB. It struggles to play standard-definition YouTube video without skipping (high definition is definitely out), often skips while playing Xvid video files, and the last time I tried it wasn't able to hold a Skype voice call without constant audio glitching. I wouldn't recommend it.

And yes, I'd say that the G4 is really slow - unless you get a 1.5 Gig version. You may be okay if you can find a cheap Tower G4.

Like Alex, my G4 emac is a 800 Mhz ish and is dog slow. It runs 10.5 slowly. It'll play a DVD *just* with 2GB ram.

But, my mac Mini is also a G4 - and that's go 2GB RAM. It's a 1.5 Gig and does run pretty well. But I wouldn't want to do video on it.

To be completely honest (And I didn't tell you this) get a cheap Intel dual Core hackintosh... ;)

The G5 would have handled it, but it's power hungry. If you get a dual core Intel chipset the hackintosh process is easier... Just saying :)

Alternatively, you could always find an old Apple TV and hack that. It'll run 10.5 :)

I don't find that my G4 Mini is that slow, but then I'm probably not using it for such heavy-duty stuff. Video off t'net isn't a problem for it, but then I am running on 10.4.11, cheapskate that I am.
