Done...and you have been ;-)
Sep. 12th, 2005 01:21 pmI think the install is now done. The machine is quicker and... nicer. So much nicer. Oooh, it's yummy.
I've set it up so everyone's got their own little user space. Everyone does have to put up with my screen res though, because my monitor / XP isn't clever enough to do separate resolutions for different people - at least not as far as I can tell.
Yesterday Trey and I went halvesies on a dual layer DVD-Writer, which means that some stuff can get cleared off (not a huge amount); some backed up (at last) and I can make a DVD of my stuff to send to my mum.
It must be said this was suprisingly painless. The disk is, I'm certain, still a hideous mess, with bits of the Win2k install left on there; but hey, what the hell.
I'm just about to start the cylces of Windows Updating.
Well, I've done one cycle :-/
I've also got the pushbike all ready for tomorrow and when it's got a bit less... well... hot, I'll head out to the bank and to some supplier or other of 'batteries'. Expect tiredness tonight.
Still, I don't think I'm doing too badly today. I've been swimming, made Crab-apple Jelly (pseudo jam; if it sets); eaten some of the bread I baked yesterday for lunch (leaving some to have with the soup that Trey and I made yesterday, so I can have that for dinner); completely reinstalled this machine, or at least largely done so and I've also bunged the last lot of stuff through the tumble drier.
[Installing security update 1 of 27 for Windows XP]
I'm very enamoured with this MacOS style hybrid. Very. Uh hu.
Anyway, I should get my lapytopy fired up and connected up and print out stuff, and sort out the work for tomorrow. Maybe I can make a drinkable cup of coffee this time, too (I made one earlier that whatever I did to it... it was just awful, awful awful awful).

Date: 2005-09-12 06:34 pm (UTC)Unfortunately, you can't see the pseudo-dock, I'm not sure why that's not come out but it floats at the top of the screen with a bunch of icons on it.
Why are you howling in pain? t'char... Mac Users... All aestetics and useability you are ;-)

Date: 2005-09-12 07:03 pm (UTC)I've never, ever, ever felt that about an install of Windows before. That it was more or less set up the way I wanted and so on; that things were where I wanted them, and it was all nice and fluffy. The 'apple' (nee "start") menu is still irritating, I can't get that the way I want. It doesn't *look* or *feel* much like windows. And the 8 or so hours of updates (over a 720kbps dsl line!) did much to remind me of what I hate about windows.
My machine actually, if you leave it at the login prompt looks like a Mac.
I'm really an Acorn / RiscOS girl, but given that I can't do anything I want to, except play Super Foul Egg, on the RiscPC then I've got to use my commodity PC. And as we discussed before there's no way I can afford a mac anywhere near as powerful as my PC.
Otherwise I'd probably be there...

Date: 2005-09-12 07:08 pm (UTC)Even so, I'll "pay" to not have to worry about viruses and crashing and to have programs that are logical, streamlined, look good, have good screen space economy, and WORK. Which, really, i'm not paying at all, technically, since that's standard on a mac but somethign you have to pay for on a PC, making them more expensive.
Hell, anything that comes with GARAGEBAND for FREE has got to be killer. :P *pats her G5 on the case*
