Something for the weekend?
Jun. 30th, 2004 10:09 am21 days. 21 days, 1 day off (stewarding pride). This is ungood.
Anyway, I went away this (just gone) weekend, to Donington land of racing, rain and lots of Morris Minors in a field; having done an early shift (up at 5:30 work from 7:15 to 15:30) I headed home, and we loaded up the car with my two friends, their stuff, and some parts for my friend's mog that I'd collected for her (read: big chunks of metal) - and then proceeded to drive to my parents (to collect (some of) my roofrack (some of it is still missing!)). A quick stop and wander round going "argh, I still need the corner bits!" and we were off again, to Reading.
A quick stop for dinner, wait for her partner, and off we went again heading North, to Lincoln. This was achieved in stages, as her Mog's thermostat was sick and Hebe (her mog) would periodically chuck great quantities of water out..... then for whatever reason I decided to have a check round my engine bay and found that after a run of 400 odd miles, Rebecca's *brand bloody new* coil's clamp had sheared leaving the coil precariously balanced twixt mount and distributor.
Fortunately I actually had my spare coil in the boot - unfortuantely it's clamp did not fit without some forcing and, well, there's a distinct lack of screw holding it together. However, the running repair's carried her all the way there and home, and to work....
Anyway, we got to Lincoln and met up with our 6th comrade. We then spent an entertaining night on Multiphonikks floor; well, on an air-bed which unfortunately deflated leaving me relaxing on the floor (I dun' care, it's not as hard, nor as cold as sleeping in a tent!). After 23 hours awake (at 2:30am) I snuggled down in my sleeping bag and slept almost solidly until about 6 am. My bloody body clock and me need to have a chat.... Anyway, got back to sleep and eventually work up around 9, I think.
After a rather confused morning we discovered that Hebe's sidelight had decided that it had had enough of consisting entirely of rust.... Attempts to repair the truely disintegrated object were unsucessful, so we headed off to the Mogfest with Hebe being down one light....
.....a stop for a petrol station proved one thing; Lincoln is the land that LRP forgot. Poor Rebecca is tuned for 98 octane, and 95 octane unleaded sucks arse - even so we hared over to Donington...
....of course, on arrival at the show, having travelled a staggering 450 miles it pissed with rain. It was *'orrible*. Both cold and wet, loads of traders having big tarpaulins, understandibly, covering all their stuff. After a little while in the rain there was a distinct feeling that perhaps we should retire to the big tent with some food and a hot coffee (especially as some of our crew looked *really* wet and cold). Having revived ourselves we braced ourselves and headed out again....
....after several trecks round I managed to pick up all the bits (I thought I (More on that later)) needed, apart from some nuts which are coming in the post. I hope. A bit more looking at cars, and then time to head home. 'cos it was still bloody cold and wet. Hebe, obviously in shock at the incredible change in milage, decided that her fuel pump had had enough. A fuel pump transplant was immediately performed by Multiphonikks and a very generous MMOC member (who lent 'er the tools).
.....Then we headed back (after I checked my Coil was still attached reasonably well; no one, incidentally, had a long screw with which to attach it correctly) - and down to the Southern regions of the UK where I, John and Multiphonikks spent a very rewarding sunday hitting a lump of alloy with a drift, a hammer, lime-scale remover, screwdrivers and anything else that came to hand. We also fixed the side/incicator light. Hopefully Hebe's problems should be over for a while....
....unfortunately Rebecca's were starting again. I noticed a bit of a judder on the way back from Reading, and indeed pulling away from Multiphonikks house. A quick inspection yesterday told me that the engine steady was giving up the ghost (it's cracked around the weld this time). This morning I had to pull out from a dip 'twixt drive and road and was rewarded with a resounding "CRACK!" - the engine steady has steadied it's last. So a new one is ordered despite the fact that the money situation is increasingly desparate.
As I say, I'm now intending to work 20 days out of the next 21; including one night (and no-one tell me that this is a bad idea, okay? I know it's a bad idea, I've got no choice). I'd already given up the idea of eating for 2 weeks, and am terrified as the bills come in that there's nothing left to pay them. Well, not much; just 'enough', I think, if I'm very lucky. I have paid L a big chunk of what I owe her....
...I'm hoping that the enhancement for the long distances I'm travelling to get to my placement will come through soon. But that can take up to 20 days.
And my credit card bill has to be paid before, I think, I can possibly be paid. If not it's going to be *tight*.
And I'm meant to be Stewarding at Pride this weekend, how I'll manage to pay for the petrol, the underground ticket, and everything else..... well, yeah. Badness.
I'm even beginning to think of using the £57 which has been saved for dire, dire, cannot pay bills emergencies. I'm beginning to think we're going to get there. I really need to earn some money, but I could also *really* do with a holiday. I think I also need to clean the house, i suspect that's partially to blame for my appauling head-cold symptoms.
Still, I actually feel fairly good about the universe atm, just wish it'd give me a break....

Date: 2004-06-30 02:02 pm (UTC)See, we did have fun with that bit of alloy didn';t we?
I mean, what else would provide that much fun eh?
If pride really looks like it's not going to happen worry not. Rather have friends with money.
